City officials shouldn’t be isolated

To the editor:

I am not a resident of Presque Isle, but I have family there and spend a significant amount of money there, so I feel that I have a right to add my 2 cents’ worth.

I want to say congratulations to Shawn Cunningham on her new job as social media and digital communications developer. However, I have concerns with the city council further isolating themselves from the public.  This move has the whiff of a cow pie to it.

Elected officials should operate with the utmost transparency and the appearance of, if not actual, propriety and ethics.  This has not always seemed to be the appearance that I have observed. The latest news seems to indicate that folks will have to pass muster with the “gatekeepers”  before they can access their elected officials; or perhaps it means access to the city council as a whole (some might find that distinction to be moot).

The city government is a different type of organization than a hospital or university who perhaps does need gatekeepers.  If you want to be in a public position then you should accept dealing with the public as part of that.  Otherwise, find something else to occupy your time.
