50 Years Ago — May 22, 1974

  Retiring teachers honored – Three longtime teachers in the Madawaska School System were honored at a retirement party at Roland’s Rendezvous last Friday, in May 1974. The retirees are Sr. Claire Cyr and Mrs. Cora Theriault, natives of Grand Isle, and Sr. Corinne Martin, a native of Frenchville. Total years of teaching service of the three retirees is 116 years. 

25 Years Ago — May 26, 1999

Mother of the year – Mathilda Ouellette was crowned the Mother of the Year for 1999 by the Ladies of St. Anne of St. Agatha Parish at Saturday’s Mass. Ouellette was born March 4, 1917, the daughter of Belone Jr. and Marie Chamberland. She was the third of a family of 12 siblings. She married Den Ouellette on Oct. 9, 1937, and the couple had 13 children. The couple currently have 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. More than 130 members of her family and friends joined in the celebration.

10 Years Ago — May 21, 2014 

Leonard won the car — Jean Leonard of Madawska was the winner of a 2013 Fiat 500, raffled off as a fundraiser to support the Grand Isle Fire Department Association. The drawing was at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014. The Leonard’s received the keys from Grand Isle Fire Department Chief Gary Campbell and Deputy Chief Bruce Bouley, along with Hervin Levesque of H&S Garage.
