A Flag Day ceremony will be held at the Presque Isle Elks Lodge, 508 Main St. in Presque Isle, at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 14.
“Elks lodges throughout the nation are urged to host an Elks Flag Day ceremony open to the public. The ceremony at the Presque Isle Lodge will be open to the public,” said Exalted Ruler Tina Dougherty. “It will feature pageantry and patriotic music, and a history of the United States flag. The Loring Job Corps color guard will make a presentation of various flags of historical significance in the evolution of the flag of our nation.”
U.S. Elks Lodges have recognized Flag Day for more than 100 years. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of a national flag for the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. Elks Lodges of Texas celebrated the first Flag Day.
June 14 also is the birth date of the United States Army. By resolution of the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, the Continental Army of the United States was created, Elks officials said.
Harry Hafford, former chairperson of the Caribou Maine Veterans Cemetery Association, will deliver the keynote address.
At the conclusion of the Flag Day ceremony, the Presque Isle Elks will serve a light meal free of charge to all those in attendance.
