Baptist Park fundraiser gives pool a facelift

Baptist Park has concluded a funding campaign to repair the Mapleton pool by installing a new pool liner.

The indoor pool was built decades ago and has been enjoyed by thousands of kids and adults over its lifespan.  However, in the last 10 years, the concrete bottom has slowly deteriorated so much that it was leaking and the concrete sealer was chipping away.

This year the camp and participating churches set a fundraising goal of $25,000 for repairs and installation of a new liner that will add 20 to 25 years to the life of the pool.  Donors raised more than $32,000. Repairs have been completed and the liner installed.

Season opens June 30

Baptist Park will offer three options for weeklong overnight camping.

For campers ages 14-18, Option One is Baptist Park’s Flight Camp, where campers learn about flying, the importance of mission fields around the world that can be only reached by flying into the region. Flight Camp will be held July 7 with check-in, and end on July 12 with a special family event at 4 p.m. that includes dinner at 5 p.m.

Option Two starts July 21: Maxed Out  Adventure Camp.  This session will end on Friday, July 26. Campers learn and practice outdoor activities that include zip lining, rock wall climbing, swimming in the camp’s pool and more.  This week will also end with a family time that includes dinner.

Option Three starts June 30 and will end July 2. This is a short camping week for young campers to give them their first overnight camping experience at Baptist Park.  Camping activities will include zip lining, crafts, games, swimming and a campfire. This short session will also have a special family event with dinner on the grounds.

For all younger age groups from 4 to 8, Baptist Park will be available on a day-camp basis.  Campers will arrive each day by 9 a.m. and leave camp at 4 p.m.

There are two age groups: 4-6 and 6-8.  Ages 4-6 (the Puddle Jumpers) will attend July 5, 15, 16, 19, 31 and Aug. 1 and 2.  Ages 6-8 are scheduled for July 5, July 17, 18, 19, 29, 30 and Aug. 2.  Age-appropriate activities will include arts and crafts, outdoor games and pool time.  A hot, nutritious lunch will be served to each camper.

There is still time to register for camp.  To learn more, visit the Baptist Park website.  There are a set of frequently asked questions that will help parents and campers learn about preparing and attending summer camp.

There is scholarship assistance for any family unable to pay the camp fee.  No camper will be turned away for inability to pay. Call the camp at 207-764-1832.

Grade 5 promotion

On Monday, June 10, 36 fifth-grade students from Mapleton Elementary School received their promotional diplomas and citizenship awards as they prepare to move on to Presque Isle Middle School this coming fall.

Following the awarding of diplomas, a slideshow reviewing the students’ past year was shown.  The students, parents, family members and staff enjoyed the video look back over the year.

Due to heavy rain, the special in-school event usually held at Haystack was held inside.  Mapleton teachers and staff put together a special trivia challenge between the students and their parents, followed by a hot dog roast put on by the Presque isle Elks Club.

The school’s annual field day was held June 5. There were many outdoor activities for all of the school’s students.  One special event was the Mapleton Mile 2024, a fundraiser for the C-A-N-C-E-R organization.  The event raised $11,500 for the cancer patient support organization.  Accepting the gift on behalf of the organization were Barry Madore, Sue Nickerson and Kathy Maynard.

More than $34,000 has been raised by the students and the school in the three years of the Mapleton Mile.
