75 Years Ago – August 23, 1949

Aroostook Faces Loss of Seed Market, MPG Official Says — More than 400 members of the Maine Potato Growers, Inc., of this area attended a regional meeting of that group that was highlighted with talks by Dr. George D. Scarseth, nationally known humorist, economist, and philosopher; Frank W. Hussey, M.P.G. president, and Harold Bryant, M.P.G. general manager, at the Northland Hotel Thursday night. Naming America as the world center of security, Dr. Scarseth said that he was amazed at the excellent job that Aroostook farmers were doing in controlling potato diseases. He said that land can be used, consumed and destroyed and added that Maine farmers don’t do that but instead improve it by using conservation.

Brown Appointment At Ricker Announced — Fred L. Putnam, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Ricker College and Ricker Classical Institute, today announced that all posts in the academic faculty are now filled, with the appointment of Thomas Austin Brown of Ventnor City, N.J. Mr. Brown graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1945 and from Franklin and Marshall College in 1949, where he received his B.S. degree. He will teach the Sciences at Ricker. 

50 Years Ago – August 28, 1974

Frame And Galda Open New Photographic Studio — Bruce Frame and Jack Galda are now open for business in their new photographic studio featuring commercial and professional studio, featuring commercial and professional photography. Bruce is no stranger to the community for he has been doing photography in the area since his high school days and through the years he attended Ricker College. The two have collaborated with their interest and knowledge in photography and have opened their Studio-Arts Photography studio at 59 Military street with many features to offer the area. 

Adrian Putnam Included In Student Who’s Who — Adrian Putnam, a 1974 graduate of Houlton High School has recently been notified that she is to be featured in the eighth annual edition of Who’s Who Among American High School Students, 1973-74, the largest student award publication in the nation.

25 Years Ago – September 1, 1999

Local High School Golf Teams Compete — The Houlton and Hodgdon golf teams are gearing up for their match today against Presque Isle at the Houlton Community Country Club. Houlton High School is now 7-1-1, while Hodgdon is 2-5 on the season. In a three-team event last Thursday at Presque Isle, the Wildcats tallied a team score of 224, besting Houlton (232) and Fort Fairfield (284).

Community Celebrates 40 Years of Potato Feast Days — The 40th Annual Potato Feast Days was held August 27-29 in Houlton and officials are extremely pleased with its success. Several activities were held throughout  the three-day event. One of the more popular games held Friday was the Potato Barrel Rolling contest. A pile of dirt was placed in the Key Bank parking lot and two wooden planks were put on both sides. Participants would start at one end, roll the barrel up and down the hill to the end of the lot, and back to the finish line. In case anyone spilled their barrel of potatoes, several local children were on hand to gather them up.
