99 Years Ago – August 27, 1925

Rotary boys at Oak Point — The Rotary Boys camp was Aug. 17 to 23 at Oak Point, Portage Lake. The boys were taken to the lake by cars from the members of the Rotary Club and Don McEachern. The guardians for the camp were Father Hayes, Elmer Howard and Ike Graves. Robert Sawyer of Ashland was the lifeguard and swimming instructor. It was a week full of instruction and enjoyment for all the boys. Baseball games, horseshoe throwing matches, foot races, jumping contests, swimming races and eating races. Out of the thirteen boys who could not swim when the camp opened, twelve of them learned.

50 Years Ago – August 28, 1974

Cary appointed assistant dean — Michael S. Cary of Washburn, was appointed assistant dean of students and coordinator of student activities at Bates College, President Thomas Hedley Reynolds announced on Friday, Aug. 23. A 1971 graduate of Bowdoin College, Cary served as a member of the Board of Overseers at Bowdoin. He received his MAT degree in History from Brown University in 1972 and his masters degree in Religion from Yale University. While at Yale, Cary served as a member of the Admissions Committee of Yale Divinity School and also played on the Yale Rugby football team.Prior to Bates, he was assistant minister of the Congregational Church in Wilton, Connecticut and worked as a turo in the black community in New Haven.

Chamber saluted Maine Mutual — The Public Relations arm of the Chamber of Commerce “saluted” the Maine Mutual Group of Insurance Companies whose home office was located at 551 Main Street in Presque Isle. The Maine Mutual Group of Insurance Companies was composed of two fire and casualty insurance companies, the United Mutual Insurance Company and the Maine Mutual Fire Insurance Company. The oldest of the companies, known as Aroostook County Patrons Mutual Fire Insurance Company, began business in 1897, so the history of these Companies is firmly entwined with the history of Aroostook County and Maine. 

A&C award — Maureen Gallagher, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Gallagher of Presque Isle, was awarded the William Haskell Trophy after being voted the most outstanding student of the summer in the Presque Isle Recreation Department’s arts and crafts program.

25 Years Ago – September 1, 1999

Townsend recorded an ace at Mars Hill Country Club — Pam Townsnd of Blaine made a hole-in-one on the 130-yard fourth hole at Mars Hill Country Club on Aug. 23. She used a five-iron to record the first hole-in-one she had ever shot. Witnessing the shot were Betty Mahan, Matt Townsend and Derek Townsend.

McCain donated a $6,800 check to the Opportunity Training Center — Steve Richard from the Opportunity Training Center accepted a ‘check’ for $6,800 from the McCain Foods Open Golf Tournament committee.Those present during the check presentation were Myrna McKeen, Brent Cronkite, Steve Richard, Tammy McCrumm, Christine Robinson, Brian Sutherland and Andrea Garrison. The annual golf tournament raised a total of $34,000 for Aroostook County charities and nonprofits.Katahdin Trust won plaudits from SBA — When it comes to helping small businesses in the County, Katahdin Trust Co. was the bank of choice according to the results of a survey by the Small Business Administration (SBA) of Washington, D.C. The survey evaluated the proportion of small business loans, the percent of the bank’s total portfolio, along with several other elements, to decide how the bank rated when compared to other financial institutions across the state and country.
