CHS track teams record top-3 efforts at PVCs

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — The Caribou girls placed second and the boys were third overall at the Penobscot Valley Conference Small School Championships, held Monday.

The Viking girls accumulated 133 points, behind only Orono’s 172. George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill took third (87) and Central was fourth (51). Nine other teams competed.

The Caribou boys’ 81 points were fewer than Orono (152) and GSA (119). Washington Academy was the fourth-place team with 64. The competition included 10 other schools.

The racewalk was the top scoring event for both Viking squads. The girls featured four of the top six finishers, with Emma Belyea winning in 8 minutes and 43.36 seconds and teammate Kendra Furber the runner-up in 9:17.78. Emily Austin and Olivia Austin also placed. For the boys, Caribou took the second through fifth positions, led by Bryce Coffin’s time of 7:46.88 for runner-up honors. Nic Alfaro was third in 10:02.94.

Paige Espling, a freshman. cleared 4 feet, 10 inches to take first in the girls’ high jump for the Vikings. Evan Michaud was the boys’ pole vault champion as he cleared 12 feet, 1 inch. They were Caribou’s only other individual victories on the day.

Also for the girls, Jojo Fields was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.8 seconds and Kendra Furber was second in the pole vault by clearing 7 feet, 6 inches.

Meagan Dube took third in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.13, Mariah Mink was third in the triple jump with a mark of 30 feet, 10.75 inches, Abigail Espling placed third in the shot put with a mark of 26 feet, 8 inches and Willow Whitten was third in the 300-meter hurdles in 50.58 seconds.

The Vikes placed three runners in the 3,200-meter run, with Abigail Wimmer’s time of 12:29.67 good for third. They also scored big points in the discus by placing three athletes. Erin Kashian had the team’s top throw of 86 feet, 10 inches, which put her in fourth.

All three Caribou relay teams ran to third-place finishes.

On the boys’ side, Andre Rossignol was the runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles in 45.43 seconds

Apollo Grondin and Maxwell Lister were third and fourth, respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles. Grondin’s time was 18.66 seconds and Lister was just 3/100ths of a second back at 18.69.

The Vikes’ 4×100 and 4×800 relay teams each placed third and the 4×400 team was fourth.

Caribou will be back at Dover-Foxcroft Saturday, June 3, for the Class C state championships.
