102 Years Ago – Oct. 14, 1915
Missionary Society meeting — The Woman’s Missionary Society of the Baptist Church met with Mrs. W. P. Palmer. After the opening devotional exercises, the regular routine of business was transacted and the study of home mission work was taken up. The society planned to study “In Red Man’s Land,” and “Kiowa.” Mrs. T. H. Belyea read a chapter in the latter book and it was discussed in an interesting manner. Mrs. Palmer read a paper on the Red Man of Yesterday, and Mrs. Clarence Farnham gave a sketch of Isabel Crawford and her work among the Indians.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 8, 1942
Boy Scout drive — Dr. Malcolm D. Harris, general chairman of Presque Isle’s Boy Scout financial drive, announced that 40 solicitors were making the rounds in order to clean up the drive by Saturday. The solicitors worked under the supervision of team captains Robert Eames, Carroll Stone and Harley Kierstead. Presque Isle’s wartime quota was $1,500 and according to the generous response to date, it appeared as if the city was more than “going over the top”. Keep up your faith in the Boy Scout movement by a wholehearted donation.
Akeley commissioned — Richard Akeley, of this city, was among the members of the latest class to complete training at Quantico, Virginia, and be commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Akeley, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Akeley of Presque Isle, enlisted Dec.r 15, 1941, graduated from the University of Maine in 1940 with a degree in agriculture and economics, and was a member of Phi Eta Kappa social fraternity, Alpha Zeta, and Phi Kappa Phi honorary societies.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 11, 1967
Owls beat Ricker 5-2 — The Owls of Aroostook State won their their third straight soccer game downing Ricker 5 to 2 under the lights in Houlton. The Owl team played their best game of the year against a talented squad from Ricker. Gary Shaw scored four goals, and the final goal was booted in by Brian Cates on a picture play. Outstanding for ASC was goalie Laughn Drillen who made several spectacular saves, Dave MacLaughlin, first year man, who demonstrated a finesse rarely seen from a new player; Ron Gartley, excellent ball handler and passer; Bob Bourget, talented fullback; and Rusty Clukey, tough offensively and defensively.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 7, 1992
Over 55,400 baked spuds — The Maine Potato Board’s baked stuffed potato booth proved to be a major attraction at “Big E”, the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Mass. Personnel at the booth, including board and industry representatives, Future Farmers of America members and regular staff, served up 55,448 baked Maine potatoes during the 12-day event. At $2.25 each, the effort brought in $124,758 for the board.
Author visited Washburn — Author Jerry Pallotta spent a day at Washburn District Elementary School, sharing his book with the students in grades K-8. Pallotta had written 11 alphabet books and one book about lobstering. The students were able to purchase books and have them autographed.
