PRESQUE ISLE – High-end products at discounted prices is how owner Darrin Ward describes Consumer Discount.
Located at 16 Dyer St. in Presque Isle, Ward sells building supplies that are surplus or discontinued.
“I sell things that you can pretty much buy anywhere else in town,” he said, “but the difference is, a lot of my stuff you’re getting for about half price. Some windows you can even get a better deal than that.”
Consumer Discount opened the first of November.
“I had been talking about opening a store for a couple of years now, and I’ve owned apartments for years, so I had a background in building supplies,” he said, “so I decided to buy the business.
“Things are going pretty well,” said Ward.
“Things were good up until Christmas, but it’s slowed down since then, but everybody is saying that.”
Many of Ward’s customers are home handymen who are working on various projects.
“I have a lot of people who are doing projects at their house come in and buy stuff,” he said, “but I’m starting to get some contractors coming in, too.”
Ward sells everything from shingles to windows.
“I sell doors, tools, hardware, electrical and plumbing supplies, and even cupboards,” said Ward.
“There are certain brands that I deal with such as Andersen and Harvey windows, Therma-Tru Doors, and Price Fister Plumbing supplies. It’s all stuff that people have heard of.
“I carry high-end, name brand products,” he said, “that you can’t get cheaper anywhere else.”
Consumer Discount, located in the former Taylor Rental building, is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 760-8300.
