BUCKSPORT, Maine — The Caribou wrestling team officially opened its regular season by competing in the Ryan Detour Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Bucksport High School Saturday.

The Vikings had three of their team members place among the top four, with sophomore captain Caleb Robbins taking third in the 138-pound division and sophomore captain Rylee Saucier and freshman Ethan Edgecomb both earning fourth-place honors in the 120- and 106-pound weight divisions, respectively.

The Caribou A team placed eighth overall out of 27 teams by compiling 44 points in the meet.

Junior Mason Smith, who competes in what Caribou coach James “Chico” Hernandez calls a very competitive 285-pound weight class, picked up a pair of match wins but did not place.

“We wrestled to the best of our ability and at this point of the season we need to work more on conditioning and minimize the mistakes which result in defeats,” Hernandez said. “Morale is very high on this very young team and we need to work harder and mature quickly as wrestlers if we are to be competitive in a very star loaded Penobscot Valley Conference.

“We will take our lumps this season but that will only makes us better and I am proud of the kids as they are doing the best they can,” he added.

Dexter placed first in the team standings, followed by Foxcroft Academy and Mattanawcook Academy.
