Chandler’s ace highlights tourney
Steve Chandler of Presque Isle scored a hole-in-one on the 135-yard sixth hole at Portage Hills Country Club, winning a new car in the process during the fifth annual Ashland Rotary Club Four-Person Scramble held Saturday.It was the second vehicle Chandler has won for getting a hole-in-one and was the third ace of his golfing career. Witnessing the shot were his playing partners, Jim Kelley, Aubrey Cyr and Carl Flora, as well as Lloyd Clark and Leon Buckingham.
The vehicle, a Dodge Caliber, was provided by Percy’s Auto Sales of Presque Isle.
Chandler and his three teammates also took low net in the tourney with a 52. Winning the gross title were Mike Levesque, Greg Cyr, Carl Nemer and Jeremy Tarr with a 61.
Taking second net, with a 54, were Mike Bouchard, Chad Cyr, Casey Boucher and Jared Boucher. The second gross team included Guy Cyr, Doug Collin, Paul Cancelarich and Jim Violette. Their score was 62.
With a gross score of 69, the team of Alexis Madore, Betty Deveau, Ursula Johnston and Sandra Beaupre won the ladies division. Taking low net with a 55 was the team of Bethany St. Pierre, Sheila Nemer, Kathy Levesque and Karen Hobliwicz.
22-mile bike race scheduled Aug. 5
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will host the PI Classic bike race on Sunday, Aug. 5. The race begins at 10 a.m. at the Presque Isle Indoor Pool, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. This is a 22-mile race and is open to all cyclists ages 14 and older. There is a $15 registration fee. Call 764-2545 for more information.
Hoop tournament has 12-team field
The third annual Girls “County” Basketball Shootout will be held Friday and Saturday in Fort Fairfield.
Sponsored by Pepsi Bottling Group, the tourney features 12 teams from the County, state and New Brunswick. The opening rounds will have a round-robin format, before advancing into semifinal and final action.
Teams taking part include Stearns of Millinocket, Narraguagus of Cherryfield, Shead of Eastport, Penobscot Valley of Howland, Katahdin, Hodgdon, Central Aroostook, Washburn, Fort Kent, Southern Victoria and host Fort Fairfield.
Games are open to the public and will be held at Fort Fairfield High School and the community center beginning Friday at 3 p.m. Admission is $4 per person, which is good for all games on both days.
