HOULTON, Maine — Edward Lake and Mark Horvath will be returning to the Houlton Town Council, as they were elected to a three-year and two-year term, respectively, in local elections held on Tuesday.
Both Lake and Horvath ran unopposed, but the election featured write-in candidates Josh Bennett, James Peters and current council Chairperson Chris Robinson. Lake and Horvath each received more than 790 votes. The write-in candidate with the most votes, Chris Robinson, received 101 and was also elected for a three year term. Peters received 28 votes, but was the only write-in on the two year term ballot, and thus was elected.
For the RSU 29 school board, Margaret York, Darryl Scott White and Tammy Goetsch received the three highest votes at 645, 612 and 506 votes, respectively.
Lynette McLaughlin and Jody Anderson were elected to three-year terms as directors of Houlton Water Company, respectively receiving 853 and 850 votes. Kathy Chase ran unopposed for a five-year term for the Cary Library Board of Directors, receiving 943 votes.
In total, 1086 votes were cast in the local election.
In the state referendum elections, Houlton narrowly voted “No” on Question 1, a decision on whether to ban further construction of the Maine CMP corridor, with 552 voting “No” to 518 “Yes.” The state as a whole voted yes on Question 1, thus rebuking the corridor.
The town also voted “Yes” on the bond issue to improve transportation infrastructure, in keeping with the rest of the state, and voted “No” on the constitutional amendment for a right to grow food, which was ultimately approved by the statewide vote.
