Hirsch, Jerry J., of Presque Isle, died September 19, 2007 at the V.A. hospital in Caribou. Hirsch died peacefully in his sleep at the V.A. hospital in Caribou, Maine, Wednesday, September 19, 2007, following a brief bout with pancreatic cancer.
    Jerry was born on August 22, 1931 to Oscar and Edna Fletcher Hirsch of Wheeling,  West Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Glenna  Gooding Hirsch of Presque Isle;  his son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Kim Hirsch and their two sons Matthew and Nathan of Hollis Center, Maine; his daughter Carlene Hirsch and her daughter Hannah of Bangor, Maine; and his daughter and son-in-law Susan and Shawn Goulet and their two children Brenden and Kate of Presque Isle, Maine. Additionally, Jerry is survived by several family members in West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Aroostook County — his mother-in-law, Gladys Bean Gooding, his sister-in-law, Kathleen Gooding and his two favorite neices Alison Gooding of Houlton, Maine and Debra Witthuhn of Wheeling, WV.
    Jerry can be remembered for his brash sense of humor, his steadfast loyalty to his family, and his love and pride for his childrens’ and grandchildrens’ accomplishments. He was judgmental and was not known to hold back his opinion as those who worked with him at the Northern Maine Raceway may have discovered. One of his true loves was Maine Harness Racing and he exercised his expertise as an Associate Judge for more than thirty seasons of racing at the Presque Isle, Skowhegan, Unity, and Bangor Raceways. Jerry was a veteran of the 74th Fighter Interceptor Squadron for the US Airforce, he worked twenty-nine years for Sears Roebuck in Presque Isle where he received numerous awards for Outstanding Salesmanship. Serving as Senior Deacon, Jerry was a member of the United Church of Christ in Presque Isle where a celebration of his life will take place on Sunday, October 7, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. All friends and family are invited to participate. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the Congregational Church of Presque Isle.
