Potato picking in northern Maine
To the editor:
An article recently published in our local newspaper, The Inquirer, about harvesting potatoes in Aroostook County caught our eye.
It was interesting to us, since my wife and I grew up in Presque Isle and Easton in the 1940s and ’50s. We spent many a cold morning out in the fields picking potatoes for 25 cents a barrel. We moved away from Aroostook in 1960 and have lived in Warminster, Penn., since then.
We thought it was awesome to see this article published so far from Aroostook. It brings back a lot of good and bad memories. We learned a work ethic that our children didn’t experience, growing up close to Philadelphia.
We come back to “The County” every year and enjoy the beautiful scenery. When you live there, you don’t realize how beautiful it really is.
Thought you would like hearing from local natives that have been transplanted to Pennsylvania, but still consider ourselves “County” people.
