MONTICELLO, Maine — A 56-year-old Bridgewater woman died last Monday morning after suffering severe trauma in an accident on snow-and-slush-covered Route 1, according to police.

Janet Hilenski was heading north in her 2003 Buick sedan just after 7 a.m. when she lost control on the roadway, Lt. Brian Harris of the Maine State Police said in a statement released Monday afternoon.

The sedan slid into the path of and collided with an oncoming 2007 Subaru Hatchback driven by 33-year-old Von Taggart of Caribou, Harris reported.

Hilenski suffered severe trauma in the crash and died at the scene, the lieutenant said. Taggart was taken by Crown Ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Both were wearing seat belts.

Harris said both vehicles received substantial damage and the roadway was reduced to one lane for approximately two hours while the accident was investigated and the roadway cleared. Harris said he did not believe that speed was involved.

Members of the Monticello and Bridgewater fire departments, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office and Crown Ambulance assisted at the scene.

The investigation is continuing, according to Harris.
