A reading program introduced to parents of newborn babies at Cary Medical Center is now in collaboration with Friends of the Caribou Public Library. The program is entitled Babies and Books, and provides the families of newborns with their baby’s first library card, a variety of handouts that give tips and suggestions for age-appropriate activities, a free board book, an invitation to come to “Mother Goose Time” from the time the baby is born and a certificate of completion when the child reaches 1 year old. At that time, a book is placed in the children’s library with the baby’s name in it, stating that they have completed the Babies and Books program.
The following babies have recently graduated from the Babies and Books program: Avonlea Givens and Ellie Monteith.

Children’s Librarian Jean Shaw holds up a copy of “Washday,” a children’s book that will serve as a certificate of completion for Avonlea Givens, who recently completed the Babies and Books reading program at the Caribou Children’s Library. Avonlea is clearly following in her mother’s footsteps, as she is pictured here with her mother Jessica Givens, who is the librarian at the Robert A. Frost Memorial Library in Limestone. The Babies and Books program provides the family with their babies’ first library card and hopes to establish a life-long love of reading. Absent from the photo was Avonlea’s fellow graduate Ellie Monteith.
