WOODLAND, Maine — A resident was arrested Easter Sunday following a domestic altercation.
According to Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall, George Hallyburton, 36, was arrested and charged with domestic assault, OUI and violation of conditions of release.
Late on the evening of April 5, sheriff’s deputies responded to a call for help on Church Street in Woodland. The caller reported that a man and woman were fighting at the home. When deputies arrived, the man had left. Through interviews of witnesses they learned that he had assaulted a woman at the residence.
Deputies searched the area, but could not find him. A short time later deputies were called back to the home, as the man had returned and the couple were fighting again. Deputies found Hallyburton driving into a nearby driveway, in his sister’s vehicle.
Hallyburton was out on bail at the time of this arrest for a felony drug trafficking charge. He had previously failed to appear in court on that drug charge, and was arrested earlier this year in North Carolina as a fugitive from justice.
Hallyburton fought extradition and a governor’s warrant was obtained to compel his return. In February, sheriff’s deputies flew to North Carolina and brought him back to Maine to face the drug charges. He was granted bail, once again, on March 13.
Hallyburton made an initial court appearance on the assault and OUI charges from the Aroostook County Jail by video Wednesday. If convicted, he faces up to a year in jail.
