CARIBOU, Maine — Seventy fifth-graders at Teague Park Elementary School recently took part in the “What America Means to Me” poetry contest, sponsored by the Lister-Knowlton Post 9389 VFW Auxiliary. An awards ceremony was held March 10, 2016 at the school.
Following a reading on the history of the American flag, certificates were awarded to the top 10 writers. The top three students also received $25 first-place, $15 second-place and $10 third-place monetary prizes.
Selena Savage was the overall winner while Carly Strid placed second and Kayley Bell earned third-place honors.
Winners also received a commemorative ruler with the pledge and a picture of the American presidents on it, a booklet on flag etiquette and an American flag.
Mrs. Stewart discussed the flag etiquette book with the students as they took turns reading the do’s and don’ts regarding the American flag.
Representing the VFW Auxiliary were Pat Edgecomb, president; Thelma Morin, conductress; and Yvonne Theriault, Americanism chair.
