My choice not to seek re-election

To the editor:

It has been an honor and incredible opportunity to serve the citizens of Caribou for eight years as your State Representative and two years as the State Senator or 37 towns in northern Aroostook County Senate District 1.

Currently, I am Senate Chair of the Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry Committee and also serve on the Education Committee. In the past, I have served as the House Chair of ACF, as well as the Lead on the Education Committee and a member of the Natural Resources Committee.

My 39 years of experience in education as a teacher of agriculture, vocational director, and superintendent, served me well in Augusta along with Christmas tree grower, gardening for farmers markets, and raising farm animals.

During my 10 years in the State Legislature, I had a 100 percent voting record except for two days while attending a grandson’s graduation.

I am grateful for the support of fellow Legislators who helped me pass or defeat legislation important to Aroostook County. Speaking softly and sincerely did work … most of the time.

I am looking forward to spending more time with wife, Marjie, who deserves much credit for her tireless support and dedication helping to serve constituents. We also are looking forward to having more time to spend with our children and grandchildren; having more chickens, gardening, fishing, traveling, and maybe even getting a dog!

Thank you for your support. Thank you for the many positive letters, notes of support, and thank you for putting your trust in me.
