115 Years Ago – Aug. 20, 1908
Accepts a new position — Dr. O. H. Brann of Augusta, a graduate of Tufts Dental School, has accepted a position in Dr. M. L. Bonney’s dental parlors. Mr. Brann has successfully passed the examination of the Maine State Dental Board and is considered a first-class man in every respect.

Donation — Patrick St. Peter, president of The County Federal Credit Union, presented the first of three $1,000 checks, a total donation of $3,000, to Dana Swett, representative of the Northern Maine Fair. This donation was for the Forestry Resource Council building.

100 Years Ago – August 9, 1923
Lectures and conferences on Junior work — Miss Elizabeth A. Fisher, assistant and director of the National Junior Red Cross, was in Presque Isle giving lectures and conferences on Junior work in the schools at the Aroostook State Normal School. Miss Fisher was in town on invitation of Principal Merriman.

Repairs are complete — Repairs on the building occupied by Tornquist Brothers grocery are now complete. A new basement with concrete walls and floor has been put in, an addition built on the rear and other improvements made. The work was done under the supervision of E. O. Dahlstrom.

  “Family garden” boom – What started as a simple “family garden” is turning into an agricultural boom for Gerald Desjardins of Van Buren. Desjardins displayed a 14-inch cucumber, one of the many products his little venture had developed.

Mother of the year — Mrs. Azilda Leonard of Grand Isle, Maine was selected as the Mother of the Year, by the ladies of St. Anne in St. Gerard’s Parish. Mrs. Leonard has three children, nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Presque Isle area From our Files – Week of Aug. 2, 2023

100 Years Ago – August 2, 1923
Field artillery batteries left for camps — A special train left Caribou Saturday morning about six o’clock for Augusta, Maine, and had as its passengers the Caribou battery. On its way down the line, it picked up Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield and Houlton batteries. The boys spent two weeks in training at the camps in Augusta. Capt. Walter Cassidy was in charge of the Presque Isle battery.
