Head in sand logic

To the editor: The ongoing debate relative to abortion is not only sad but ridiculous.  Pro-abortionists continue to bellow, “You cannot tell me what to do with my body.”  Pro-lifers naturally respond, “Baby killers.”   First of all, the government can and does tell you what we can and cannot do with our bodies. You may […]

Vote no on abortion bill

To the editor: Currently Maine law allows induced abortions through “viability” — generally considered to be about 24 weeks of gestation. The law also currently allows for abortion after the point of viability when the life of the mother is endangered (which is normally in extremely rare instances). Many states have adopted this standard, including […]

End flavored tobacco

To the editor: I have spent most of my life working in health care. One of the most rewarding aspects of this work is the opportunity to help educate the public about ways that they can live a long and heathy life. Abundant research now can help all of us make the healthy choices that […]

A special birth moment

To the editor: I remember going to college for nursing and eagerly anticipating my three-month obstetrics rotation. It was so exciting to me that I would witness the very first moments of a child’s life, and to learn in advance all the wonderful ways that baby would grow. This included pre-and postpartum care, as well […]

Speak against abortion bill

To the editor: There have been some previous editorials referring to pending legislation to allow late-term abortions.  The bill has now been released as LD1619. This is a horrific bill that would allow the life of a baby to be taken right up to the delivery.   How is that not murder of an innocent […]

Please use your common sense

To the editor: For several years I’ve written letters in this paper informing people of the abuse that goes on behind the scenes to train wild animals for circuses.  Now with the circus due to come to Presque isle in a couple of weeks and seeing wild bears riding scooters are one of the acts […]

Remembering Brother Sylvio

To the editor: It was 1951 in Nashua, New Hampshire, at St. Louis De Gonzague Catholic Church on West Hollis Street. A dozen or more granite steps led to the cross-shaped house of worship, site of baptisms, first communions, confirmations, marriages and eventual funerals of so many thousands of people like us: hardworking, legal French […]

Please speak up

To the editor: This is the first time I have ever felt passionate enough on an issue to write a letter to the editor, but on  Saturday, March 25, I attended a Speak Up For Life meeting in Presque Isle and learned of legislation regarding the abortion issue here in Maine.

Vote no on abortion bill

To the editor: At one time people believed that abortion was safe and it was legal. It’s still legal in early pregnancy in Maine.  But I understand that now there are some bills being written to expand abortion in Maine and I think the people need to be informed what their policy makers are doing.

Both sides, please

To the editor: Staff writer Jessica Potila in The March 15 issue puts forth what I see as a one-sided story of a 74-year-old man who (given no other motive provided) opted to shoot his across-the-street neighbor’s dog. The story lays the apparent blame on Harold Thibeault. No mention whatsoever is made of any motivation […]
