Island Falls notes

Mrs. Paula Chamberlain and her mother, Mrs. Pauline Robbins have arrived from Virginia to spend two weeks visiting with relatives here and also to spend time at the Chamberlain camp on Lower Mattawamkeag Lake where husband, Alan, has been for two weeks.
Mr. Ed Wood arrived on August 2 to stay at the family cottage on Mattawamkeag Lake and to visit with his aunt, Riva Hawkes. While here he plans to do quite a bit of work on the grounds around the camp and, also to do repair work on the camp itself. When not working he enjoys kayaking and fishing so hopefully he gets to do some of that between jobs.
Despite the bad weather, there was a good turnout for the steak supper held at the Fish and Game Club house on August 1 where all who attended enjoyed the meal, which included lots of home made pies for dessert.
Carletta (Pettengill) Nevers and husband, Gary, have returned home to Hanover, N.H. after spending week here at Vacationland Estates. While here, they attended the Island Falls Alumni banquet, had a family reunion in Patten at Ted and Terry Pettengill’s home, visited with other relatives here in the area and just had a good time being back in the area where they grew up.
Well, on checking my big lawn lately have found many, many other holes that the diligent skunks have made while searching for grubs. This has kept me busy finding them and filling them back up. One morning about 6, I happened to look out my window and there way down back on the lawn was a big skunk busily digging away. It’s the first time I had ever seen one in the act.
I also have a doe and her fawn, who appear every so often and it’s fun to see the little one leaping around and trying to get her mother to play with her. They have also begun to nibble at my potato leaves so I had to go out and cover the potatoes with mesh. I am hoping this will keep them away from the leaves. They have nibbled on the carrot leaves, too, but that is fine with me. Carrots are too big now to wrench out of the ground.
I still see the black cat, but lately he isn’t around when I go to get the paper in the morning. Take the dry food anyway and guess he eats it sometime during the day.
