The Central Aroostook Panthers continue to lead the pack in the Eastern Maine Class D Heal Point standings.
CA, which bounced back from a loss to Katahdin with wins over Ashland and Madawaska, is 12-2 entering an important game in Dyer Brook Friday against Southern Aroostook. Coach Tim Brewer’s Panthers have 55.89 tournament index points.
Fort Fairfield, at 10-1 with 44.69 points, is in second place and had won 28 of 29 regular season contests over the past two seasons entering last night’s home matchup with Van Buren.
Washburn is in fifth place with an 8-3 record and 32.04 tournament index. The Beavers defeated Southern Aroostook Thursday and Van Buren Friday and had won five in a row heading into a home contest last night against Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
Easton is currently 12th (5-8, 11.20), Ashland 13th (5-8, 10.3) and Limestone/MSSM 16th (2-11, 3.26) and all three teams have just five games remaining on their regular season schedules.
Summaries of games played through Monday, Jan. 18 are as follows:
Central Aroostook 61, Madawaska 56 – At Madawaska Monday, Caleb Kelly scored seven of his 15 points in the fourth quarter as Central Aroostook came from behind for its 12th victory of the season.
Mike McClung had 14 points and Mitch Folsom scored 13 points for the winners, who trailed by three points at halftime.
Matt Deschenes led the Owls with 16 points.
Easton 70, East Grand 36 – At Easton Monday, Jacob Bacon scored 16 points as the Bears bested East Grand. Reid Clark had 15 points and Holden Turner added 14 for the Bears, who halted a three-game losing streak.
Andrew Gilman scored 10 points to pace the Vikings.
Washburn 69, Van Buren 39 – At Washburn Friday, Connor Fitzpatrick poured in 15 points and Mitch Worcester added 13, including three three-pointers, as the Beavers claimed the easy win.
The Beavers led by just two points at the end of the first quarter, but used a 25-0 run in the second to win going away.
Fort Fairfield 59, Katahdin 35 – At Stacyville Friday, the Tigers placed four players in double figures to get past the Cougars.
Jahleel Williams and Travis Noyes each popped in 15 points to pace Fort Fairfield, Dereck Dufour contributed 11 and John McNamee had 10 to round out the balanced attack.
Colby Gallagher led Katahdin with 13 points and teammate Colton Bivinghouse added 12.
Washburn 62, So. Aroostook 57 – At Dyer Brook Thursday, Worcester’s 32 points led Washburn to the victory over Southern Aroostook. The Beavers led at all the quarter breaks, 12-8, 26-17 and 41-36, and evened up its season series with the Warriors.
Connor Fitzpatrick had 11 points for the Beavers.
Cody Robinson totaled 19 points for the Warriors and Dakota Sleeper added 18 points. Washburn (7-3) 62
Katahdin 52, Cen. Aroostook 51 – At Mars Hill last Wednesday, Lucas Craig made a layup with four seconds remaining to give Katahdin of Stacyville the lead and the win over Central Aroostook.
Brandon Robinson scored 23 points for the Cougars.
Caleb Kelly paced the Panthers with 16 points and Logan McLaughlin added 12.
GHCA 59, Ashland 58 – At Ashland last Wednesday, Micah Wiley made a layup with just three seconds remaining to give Greater Houlton Christian Academy the win over Ashland.
Chad Duff led the Eagles with 19 points, including the 1,000th of his career, while Wiley chipped in 14.
Lucas Hafford had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets and teammate Kenny Tarr scored a game-high 21 points.
Fort Fairfield 64, LCS/MSSM 29 – At Fort Fairfield last Tuesday, John McNamee netted 11 of his game-high 16 points in the third quarter as Fort Fairfield topped the Eagles.
Nobody tallied more than four points for the Eagles.
