To the editor:
A few weeks ago, I attended a Visiting Artist Concert at the high school featuring the Houlton High School Jazz Ensemble and the Maine Trombone Collective. For the first time since returning to Houlton, I had the opportunity to hear these high school musicians and I was very impressed. The highlight of the evening, personally, was the arrangement of that great Evergreen and Errol Garner classic “Misty”, which featured the solo work of the leader of the Trombone Collective backed by the Jazz Ensemble.
The musicianship of these young high school students and the arrangement was excellent and much praise goes to Joe Fagnant and all those involved with the HHS Music Department.
As I listened, it occurred to me that someone in the trumpet section, who was playing the top notes of the chord, was sharp, crisp, and punching them out like a pro. What was surprising was, when I looked to find this musician (my eyes are not as sharp as they used to be), I wondered why a young man had his hair in pig-tails. Then I realized I was looking at a very attractive young lady. Later, I was told her name is Marina DiMarco. She is a marvelous example of what is happening in the music department at Houlton High.
To all the members of the jazz band, the music faculty and the hard work of each and everyone, I tip my hat.
