American Flag ColorPT Earl Simpson    AMITY – Earl David Simpson, 84, passed away March 13, 2011 at the Veterans’ Home in Caribou, Maine after a brief illness.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, and was personally complimented by General George S. Patton for lifting the morale of his fellow soldiers after the Battle of the Bulge as he deftly played his harmonica and step-danced on a tank waiting to cross the Rhine River.
He was a life-long resident of Amity, where he was affectionately known as the “Earl of Amity.” His sense of humor was legendary and the stories of his many exploits will be told and retold for many generations to come.
Earl was born March 24, 1926 in Amity to Isaac Walton Simpson and Effie Laurina Walton. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his four brothers, Millard, Sterle, Fred, and Hollis, and three sisters, Evelyn, Rosie, and Ellen.
Surviving Earl are his wife, Joan Ewings Small of Houlton; stepchildren, Roland Small of Houlton, Richard Small of Monticello, and Lola Silva of No. Berwick; one brother, Gerald of Weston; four sisters, Athlyn Titcomb of Houlton, Olive Thompson of Houlton, Lily McQuarrie of Colchester, Connecticut, and Elaine Simpson of Houlton; numerous nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.
Earl was a kind, generous man who would do anything for his family and friends. He cherished the time spent reminiscing with all who stopped by for a visit. Earl was a jack of all trades, a master at fixing just about anything – especially cars – he was even known to have pulled a tooth or two from time to time. He was truly one of a kind, and he will be sincerely missed by all who had the privilege of sharing a part of his life.
