MAPLETON NEWS
by Jennifer Buzza
On Saturday, May 7, the 49th annual Mapleton Lions Club auction will be held.
The auction will start at 6 p.m. The auction, as in the past, will be held at the Mapleton Lions Hall. There are hundreds of donated items and services that will be auctioned that evening. This annual event is the major fundraiser for the charities supported by the Lions Club. We invite everyone to attend the auction, which will follow a public ham and bean supper at the Mapleton Lions Hall. Dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and the auction will begin at 6 p.m.
Some of the club’s proceeds from the supper and auction will support local organizations including Project Graduation, Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp, Mapleton Boy and Cub Scouts and the Mapleton Recreation Department. Each year, the club hangs the Christmas lights along Main Street and the club bears the expense of the electricity used keep the lights on.
The club conducts the annual Memorial Remembrance Day Ceremony for our Mapleton, Chapman and Castile Hill veterans at the Mapleton Elementary School following the club’s annual Memorial Day Parade.
The club also helps individuals with little income to purchase eyeglasses. In the 1920s, Helen Keller asked Lions Club International to become the “Knights for the Blind.” Mapleton Lions continue in this tradition by collecting used eyeglasses that are recycled for third world countries.
The Mapleton Lions Club auction is the first of its two major fund-raising projects for these purposes. In June, the Mapleton Lions Club will host the Lions Club annual chicken barbecue as the kick-off event of Mapleton Daze which the club sponsors. The club also sponsors the Maple Meadow Farm Festival that will take place the same weekend as Mapleton Daze.
All of these events are made possible by the generous support of our neighbors and businesses in the central Aroostook area. The public is encouraged to attend one or both of these events. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Benefit supper
The Mapleton Lions Club invites all the relatives and friends of Murrey Boyles to attend a benefit dinner to assist him with related expenses for his treatment and recovery from cancer. His treatments will consist of daily trips to The Aroostook Medical Center along with visiting nurses for several weeks.
This special dinner will be held at the Mapleton Lions Cub Hall Saturday, May 21. Dinner will be served from 4:30-7 p.m. Donations for dinner will be accepted from those attending with all donations going to Murrey and his family. There will also be a raffle of a few donated items to further assist in this fund-raising effort.
Murrey has been a lifelong resident of Mapleton. He owned and operated an auto body repair business until he retired. He is an active member of the United Methodist Church of Mapleton and the Mapleton Lions Club. Murrey has always been involved in community events and concerns of the community. Please come to support Murrey and his family as they face challenging times ahead in the fight against this disease.

Recipes needed
The Castle Hill Grange Hall Society has plans to create a cookbook to be available for purchase by Christmas 2011. It has been 11 years since the society sold its last cookbook. The public is encouraged to share favorite recipes for this publication. Please feel free to submit as many recipes as you choose. Submissions can be e-mailed to dusty5799@yahoo.com or mailed to Sheena McHatten, 1931 State Road, Castle Hill, Maine 04757-5105. Recipes can also be hand-delivered to any member.
Please keep in mind that the hall is available for rent from May 1-Nov. 1. The society is always looking for new members. Meetings are only once a month. Volunteers are asked to consider donating an hour each month to assure that the hall stays open and available for public use.
Save your pennies!
Mapleton Elementary School has kicked off their annual penny drive for the Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C-A-N-C-E-R) golf tournament this week. Students and staff will be collecting their pennies (and other change and bills) as a fundraiser to sponsor a hole at the C-A-N-C-E-R golf tournament. The tournament is a fundraiser to help those in treatment for cancer in our area and will be held June 4 at the Presque Isle Country Club. Donations will be collected until May 20. Last year the school contributed $700 to the golf tournament with 100 percent of the funds raised benefiting those patients going through treatment. The school sponsored a hole and sent two teams to participate in the tournament. Anyone wishing to make a donation can stop by the school’s front office.
