Aroostook Times
Littleton — L.H. Woodworth brought to our office a stalk of green corn 9 feet high, which he cut from his garden.
Houlton High School — Prof. F.W. Burrill, the first principal at Houlton High School and who for the past year has been Superintendent in the Island Falls District, has recently been elected superintendent of schools at Hallowell.
Sheep — It may be an eye opener to those who think the sheep is an extinct animal in Aroostook to learn that F.M. Akeley recently shipped a carload of 10,000 pounds of wool.
75 Years Ago-August 20, 1936

Linneus — About 85 attended the reunion of Houlton people who had at any time lived in Linneus or who were descendants of the town, which was held at the Country Club. Organizers were Norris C. Estabrook, Roy A. Bither and Clifton K. Adams. Bither gave an interesting history of the town which was incorporated in 1830. The first settler was Daniel Neal who came to the spot in 1820. Another prominent family, the Burleighs; originally spelled Burley.
Low bid — John G. Chadwick, for many years a contractor in Houlton and probably the oldest in Aroostook County in point of experience recently submitted a low bid of $11,230 to the Treasury Department for construction of a new federal customs and immigration inspection station at Orient.

Harvest — More than 7,000 Canadian harvest workers are expected to cross the border for the annual potato harvest. Four thousand will be of Quebec origin and 3,000 claiming New Brunswick as their home.
Local — George Niles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Niles returned recently after spending several weeks at the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Timothy Tufts and Thomas Anderson visited last week at the home of the former’s grandmother, Mrs. Joseph A. Tufts, in Hancock Point.

Jr. Miss — Elizabeth Leighton, daughter of Roger and Sheila Leighton was presented the title of Greater Houlton Junior Miss out of a field of 12 contestants. She also received the scholastic achievement, creative and performing arts and the poise and appearance awards, totaling $150 in savings bonds. OPENING DAY — A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Mrs. Way’s Old and New Antiques on Kendall Street. Present for the opening-day ceremony were from left, R. Lewis Bone, town manager, Eugene Graham, Town Council chairman, Jon McLaughlin, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Ruby Way, owner, Houlton Junior Miss candidate, Aimee Hutchinson, Thelma Smith, executive secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and Carolyn McCarty, secretary of the Chamber.
Foundation — Robert Anderson, president of the Houlton Regional Health Services Foundation has introduced a new comprehensive giving program designed to benefit the hospital and support the health care needs of the southern Aroostook area.
H.R.H. — The residents of Houlton and all southern Aroostook communities have been extended an invitation to visit Houlton Regional Hospital for the 10th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony.
