PORTLAND — A group of eight men will be ordained as permanent deacons at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception this Saturday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. The role of ordained deacons is to assist priests in preaching, celebrating the sacraments of baptism and marriage, and other duties determined by the pastor or bishop.
This is the third group to be ordained to this ministry for the Diocese. The first group was ordained in 1998; the last group was ordained seven years ago. Each of these deacon candidates has received a master’s in pastoral studies from Loyola University, New Orleans.
Among those being ordained by Bishop Richard Malone during the 10 a.m. Mass are: Dr. Ronald Ouellette of St. Mary of the Visitation, Houlton and St. Agnes, Island Falls. Dr. Ouellette graduated from the University of Maine, Augusta and received his doctor of chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa.
