White named winner of spelling bee

Katelyn White was named this year’s winner of the Scripp’s National Spelling Bee in Easton. Jacob Flewelling was the runner-up. The first round of the 2012 Scripp’s National Spelling Bee was held at the Easton Jr./Sr. High School gymnasium on Jan. 26.

The Easton School Department would like to extend congratulations to the winner, Katelyn White, and the runner-up, Jacob Flewelling. Katelyn is the daughter of Bruce and Elaine White and Jacob is the son of Brian and Lynn Flewelling.
Katelyn and Jacob will represent the Easton School Department at the Aroostook County Spelling Bee.
This will be held on Friday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. in the Fox Auditorium at the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
Winter Fun Day
Dozens of Easton Elementary School students enjoyed a number of activities as part of Winter Fun Day. From skiing to tug of war, the children spent some quality time together outside. Events were also enjoyed inside the school as well.

Handling finances
Have you ever wanted to improve your personal finances? If so, Laurie and Vaughn Martin will be leading “Financial Peace University” by Dave Ramsey. This 13-week program is designed to help you develop specific skills to eliminate debt and live within your financial limits. The first session will be free to all teens and adults interested in checking out this program. It will be held at the Easton Wesleyan Church on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m. Child care will be provided.
Zumbatomic classes to begin
Zumbatomic classes are rockin’, high-energy fitness parties packed with specially-choreographed, kid-friendly routines and all the music kids love, like hip-hop, reggaeton, cumbia and more. Parents love Zumbatomic because of the effects it has on kids, increasing their focus and self-confidence, boosting metabolism and enhancing coordination. Classes will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 7, and run through March 13. The cost is $10 for the first child in each family, with a $2 discount for each additional child. Classes will take place at the Hall until 4 p.m.
The next swim lesson session for the Easton Rec Department will start on Feb. 6 and run through March 12 (with no lessons Feb. 20) with classes directly after school. The cost is $17.50 for the first child from a household and $13.75 for each additional child. Open to ages four and up! You must pre-register at the Town Office prior to the first lesson.
Zumba Saturdays continue
The class will run until Feb. 18 in the Easton Elementary Gym from 8 to 9 a.m. Please pre-register at Easton Town Office. The cost is $24 for the six-week session; drop-in rate is $6, note price change.

Wednesday, Feb. 1 — Junior Activities 9:30-11 a.m. at the Hall. Senior Exercise Class at 1 p.m. in the Recreation Room at the Manor. Ski for Life at Ferris’s on Ladner Road until 4:30 p.m., conditions permitting. Grades 5 and 6 boys’ basketball practice from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 2 — Little Bears’ cheerleading practice 3 to 4 p.m. at the elementary school. Big Rock field trip (weather permitting) after school until 6 p.m. The cost is $6.
Friday, Feb. 3 — Junior Activities 9:30-11 a.m. at the Hall. Seniors’ game day starting at 11:15 a.m. Bring a bag lunch.
Saturday, Feb. 4 — Zumba with Zumba Toning from 8-9 a.m. in the elementary school gym.
Little Bears’ basketball grades 1 and 2 from 9-10 a.m. in the elementary gym. Little Bears’ basketball for grades 3 and 4 from 10-11:15 a.m. Grades 5 and 6 boys’ basketball practice from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Monday, Feb. 6 — Senior Nutrition Class starting at 11 a.m. in the Recreation Room at the Manor. First swim lesson after school; bus will return to the Hall by 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration required at the Easton Town Office. Open to ages 4 and up.
Tuesday, Feb. 7 — First Zumbatomic class from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Hall. Pre-registration required at the Easton Town Office. The cost is $10. Open to ages 4 and up. Grades 5 and 6 basketball games vs. Washburn; girls at 4:15 p.m. and boys at 5 p.m. Little Bears’ basketball scrimmage (with cheerleaders); grades 1 and 2 at 5:45 p.m. and 3rd and 4th grade at 6:30 p.m.
