Spring is in the air

IN THE CITY

by Laurie Kelly

It’s springtime in the city of Presque Isle … well, most of the snow is gone anyway … and so comes your whole list of seasonal chores: Do spring cleaning. Put away winter clothes and pull out summer clothes … wash all of same. Put away snow removal equipment and bring out lawn equipment and summer furniture. Take down storm windows and banking around the house … the list is long!

There are a couple of things that the Presque Isle Police Department would ask that you add to your growing list of “Spring Things to Remember” and those are:

• Have studded tires off by May 1st – doing this will ensure at least one more snow squall – but it is the law!

• Watch for more and more pedestrians on the road – schools will be out or on vacation.

• Folks will be changing to more economical modes of transportation with the warmer weather – like motorcycles, bicycles, etc. … keep an extra watch for them as well.

Finally, if you are a young adult or the parent/guardian of one, please remember that this is the time of year for graduations, celebrations, leaving the proverbial nest … and alcohol issues. Especially this time of year, many young lives and the lives of their families are cut short by alcohol-related deaths or injury. Please keep your young lives and their futures safe by not using or abusing alcohol at graduation parties or other celebrations and “Parents who Host, Lose the Most.” Parents or others who host parties with under-age drinking involvement are criminally and civilly liable for the lives and general well-being of those party goers – even after they may have left your home(s).

Let us have a happy and healthy springtime and, if you can only choose one thing to do from your list, please choose the safety of our children and community.
