ORONO — The Presque Isle Wildcats’ hockey team saw its record fall to 3-6 following Friday’s 6-1 loss to Orono at the University of Maine’s Alfond Arena.

The Red Riots scored the match’s first six goals, including two in a 10-second span midway through the second period.

Presque Isle finally got on the scoreboard with 1:41 to play as Colin McKay scored off assists from Jeremy Gingrich and Alex Michaud.

Jillian Flynn was PI’s starter in goal, with backup Oliver Gerrish entering in the second period.

PI held a 31-25 shot advantage.

Coach Carl Flynn said defensive letdowns and untimely penalties were the main reasons behind the defeat. The Wildcats had won two in a row entering the match.

“I thought we regressed as it relates to our recent progress of playing better team defense,” Flynn said. “We played excellent for the first five minutes, then we started to run around in our defensive zone and didn’t keep track of our assignments, resulting in the goals.”

The ’Cats were at home against Houlton-Hodgdon Tuesday and will next host Lawrence at 6 p.m. Friday.
