Probus holds meeting

Seventeen members of the Probus Club of Aroostook met at Reed Commons on the Northern Maine Community College campus Jan. 17.

Program chairman Dave Maxcy introduced guest speaker Rachel Rice, the media relations coordinator at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Maxcy explained how Probus is sponsored by and connected to the Rotary Club.

Rice reviewed news and highlights from UMPI, including development of Physical Therapy Assistant and Early Childhood Education courses, the welcoming and inauguration of university’s new president, the planned renovation of Wieden Auditorium, the successful youth triathlon, community relations, upcoming World Polio Day, anniversary activities, Distinguished Lecturer Series, University Day, Young Professionals Institute and summer programs.

Discussion followed the speaker presentation. Members joined Maxcy and club president Jane McEwen in thanking Rice.

Pearl Carmichael gave three readings. The business meeting was conducted by McEwen. Members approved payment of International Probus dues and a $500 scholarship to an NMCC student.
