Land completes internship at NMG

EAGLE LAKE — Megan Land, a senior at the University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK), recently completed an internship at the business office of Northern Maine General (NMG) in Eagle Lake. UMFK’s internship coordinator, John Pelletier, inquired about the possibility of Land completing her internship at NMG last fall since Land’s studies were focused in health care administration.

Land met with NMG’s CEO Reynold Raymond and Accounting Supervisor Missy Boutot to express her interest in completing this internship at the organization’s business office. She was on site at the business office three days a week. Boutot worked with Land to expose her to various business office topics such as month-end closing processes, financial statement completion, budgeting, internal control procedures, cost reporting and annual auditing requirements.
Land worked on several special projects during her internship. She helped NMG develop a supervisor’s handbook which centrally located forms that NMG supervisors commonly use. Land also worked with Michelle Raymond, administrator for NMG’s Community Living Division, to revise program policies. Land’s final project was working with Mercy Home’s administrator, Denise Raymond, and director of nursing, Stephanie Gagnon, to develop an instruction manual in the long-term care division.
Land also attended several administrative staff meetings, took minutes and did a presentation on the special project she was working on. She also spent several hours working at the agency’s busy front desk answering telephones and greeting visitors.
When asked about the internship, Land said, “My internship at NMG has broadened my education and scope in health care, and it has provided me with many essential tools that will help to shape my future.”
In the fall of 2010, Land transferred to UMFK from a community college in Salinas, Calif., where she was born and raised. She was brought to the college on a basketball scholarship, which she participated in for two years upon completion of her eligibility in 2012. She is attending school to receive a degree in business management with strong emphasis in health care administration. She is on track to graduate in May 2013 and plans to start her search for a job working in a health care facility thereafter.
