The next meeting will be a potluck on March 20. On April 3 we will have a St. Patrick’s and Easter dinner together. Bring a dessert. Meeting was adjourned at 1 p.m. and then we played bingo.
Present were Annie Atkinson, Donna Grass, Eva Perry, Paul Qualey, Sandra Qualey, Fran Gorman, Esta Greenier, Bonita Staples and Linniea Perry.

Houlton Council of Catholic Women
by Lois Downing

Houlton Council of Catholic Women met Sunday, March 3 after the 10:30 Mass for its March meeting. It was held in the parish center with a small attendance but moderator Rev. David Raymond and guest Bill Roach were present.
President Janet Barker greeted everyone. Fr. Dave gave the blessing before the meal, after the traditional prayers were said. A lovely lunch was prepared and headed by Bernette Roach with assistance from Alta Reardon, Jane Stile and Jane Mitchell.
A birthday card for Paul McGillicuddy who will celebrate his 100th birthday March 16 was distributed. Jane Stile gave everyone Easter eggs with the jelly bean prayer attached.
When the meeting resumed Jane Stile gave the minutes of the previous meeting and Janet Barker gave the financial report in the absence of Mary Grant, treasurer. Lois Downing read the correspondence.
The next meeting of Maine Diocesan Council of Catholic Women will be at Gorham April 27. The October gathering will be in Bangor at St. Joseph’s Church.
A discussion was held as to hold a state meeting here in Houlton in July. No concrete plans were made at this time. Fr. Dave had to leave early but reminded everyone of what Lent is all about and to support the St. Patrick’s Bazaar March 16.
Jane Stile and Alta Reardon will volunteer at the church store religious table and Janet will help with the paddle wheel; she asked for volunteers for the food table. Several gave their names. Lynette Dobbs will deliver the items collected at the April meeting for the animal shelter, always an April project for Council.
The Holy Oils Mass will be held March 27 at St. Mary’s and Council will provide a luncheon for the priests after the Mass. Also they will provide food items for the RCIA reception March 30.
Jane Stile and Alta Reardon will be selling religious items before and after Masses March 10 and also St. Patrick’s Bazaar.
The annual rummage sale sponsored by Council will be October 3, 4 and 5. President Janet read some facts on St. Catherine and birthdays for March were recognized as well as anniversaries. Valentine bags were purchased for New Year by Jane Stile for their project for 2014.
Prayer intentions were gathered and  three Hail Marys were recited. Bunny Tidd won the door prize but gave it up for another number to be drawn, Louise Guillette. The next meeting will be April 7.

Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing

Here I am again. Looking for snow? Wondering if there will be more and the chances are yes.
I was sorry to learn of Althea Lloyd’s death. She died at the nursing home, I believe and was on one of the commercials at Madigan. She lived at Ricker for a short time. She was 94. We bowled together and had a good time. She will be missed.
Also was sorry about Doreen Devonville’s death. I knew her by the name of Stewart. She was a war bride, I believe. I remember when she worked at Penney’s store when it was located in Market Square. She was a lovely person and she will be missed also.
Joe and Harriett Garnett were in Bangor on Wednesday. Congratulations to Paul McGillicuddy, who is celebrating his 100th birthday on March 16. Paul has been a very active and busy man all his life. I suspect he will have a beautiful birthday and many more to come, Paul. He has already been on television relative to his age.
Barbara Ganem was in the building visiting her many friends on Sunday. She had a friend with her whose sister lives here, so they were both able to make a stop. Plastic bags are still being left besides my door and thanks to all who do just that. The bags are put to good use and I am grateful.
A note about angels: Angels often speak to us in dreams, when the intellect is asleep and the intuition is tuned in to the frequencies of the spirit. See you next week. Have a good one!

St. Patrick’s Bazaar
By Lois Downing

Now is the time to make plans to attend the St. Patrick’s Bazaar, the big event at St. Mary of the Visitation Church on Saturday.
This event will prove to be an exciting day in your life. The Cake Walk begins at 3 p.m. and is a favorite of the children and grownups too. All kinds of cake, small big, chocolate, vanilla, green, red, and what have you. Some cakes you have never seen before!
The favorite meal is at 5 p.m. with roast turkey and all the fixings by our own chef Margaret Casey. There is also corned beef and cabbage for those who want a different dish. Homemade goodies are on sale too as well as the dessert for the meal. They have jams, jellies, relish, bread, cookies, candy, fudge and what have you.
Highlight of the evening is entertainment by our talented parishioners Joe Fitzpatrick, Brian Longstaff and their band of musicians of family and friends. Gifts for raffle prizes are a hand crafted floor clock, a boy’s and a girl’s bicycle, three-months membership to Main Street Fitness, a painting by Jim Ward and all kinds of gift certificates. Come and see, you’ll be surprised.
We are looking forward to seeing all our friends at the St. Pat’s Bazaar.

Island Falls News

On March 8 Anne Townsend, Margaret Webb and Riva Hawkes traveled to Houlton to spend some time with Bev Rand, formerly of Sherman and Island Falls, and now living at Madigan Estates due to a spell of ill health.
Bev is an avid bridge player and a former member of the Island Falls Bridge club, so he was delighted to see his former bridge partners arrive, laden with two packs of cards and a score pad. They spent the afternoon playing bridge and left just before it was time for Bev’s supper. Hopefully, they will all be able to repeat this event in the near future.
Just a reminder that the open house for the new Red Brick Restaurant will be this Saturday. It will be before the town meeting, which will start at 1 p.m. Following the town meeting the restaurant will be serving a public baked bean supper with all the fixings.
Well, the sun has been out for a couple of days lately, so a lot of the snow and ice in my driveway has disappeared. I am now anxious to see it disappear from my front lawn. The chickadees and nuthatches were not too well fed one day this week as I had gone for the day. When I returned that day, the feeders were really empty and didn’t get filled until morning. I haven’t seen too many birds since, but hope they will forgive me and return. I had a glimpse of a deer the other evening as he came trotting up my driveway on his way to the woods in back of my barn. Still have lots of old bread and apples to give them so will put some out every afternoon about dusk. That seems to be the time they drift out of the woods.
