Founders Day established in Presque Isle

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — April 16 — or the closest Saturday to it — will forever be known as Founders Day in the city of Presque Isle, following councilors’ approval of a proclamation Monday night designating the same day each year in memory of the community’s founder.

Councilor Craig Green read the proclamation into the record during Council’s March 4 meeting, noting this coincides with the Presque Isle Historical Society’s 50th anniversary this year.
“The Presque Isle Historical Society will be providing quality family-oriented educational programs and services to the Star City” throughout the year, said Green.
He said the Historical Society, “through the hard work of many volunteers, significant contributions have been made to the community, such as Molly the Trolley and the renovation of the old fire station.”
Craig explained that “Dennis Fairbanks, the founder of our community now known as Presque Isle, was born on April 16.”
To commemorate Fairbanks’ birth and his work in establishing the city, his contributions and memory will be honored annually on his birthday.
“Let it be now declared and known to all, that from this day forward, that the closest Saturday to April 16 will be heretofore known as Founders Day in the Star City,” Green read from the proclamation, with councilors unanimously giving their approval.
