In support of suffrage — The following is an excerpt from a paper on franchise (the right to vote in governmental affairs) presented at a recent meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union by Mrs. Wilson, wife of County Missionary, Q. L. Wilson. “It seems to us that every thoughtful, progressive woman who has the right sort of independence and a full rounded love for her children and humanity, must want this right.”
Ludlow news — Mr. Lloyd of Hodgdon has bought the Dr. Mann farm and moved his family there. Mr. George Mersereau and John Wilson returned home Saturday from Mr. Garcelon’s camps, where they had been working.

Hospital changes status — The Aroostook Hospital became a charitable institution to be known as the Aroostook General Hospital on Wednesday when the transfer of the personal property of the old corporation was recorded, creating a new corporation without stockholders.
Normal School naturalist addresses club — Glenn Chamberlain, naturalist, of the Aroostook State Normal School faculty of Presque Isle was guest speaker at the Wednesday meeting of the Houlton Women’s Club. He presented a most instructive and entertaining talk on the topic “Spring Birds and Flowers.”

Littleton fire destroys town garage — The Littleton town garage and a snow plow truck were totally lost in a fire early Thursday morning. In the building at the time was the heavy duty Walter truck, purchased in 1958 for $23,000. The Houlton Fire Department responded to the call and kept the flames from destroying the Town Hall which was scorched, but not otherwise damaged.

AAUW reviews new book, “Silent Spring” — A program on “Legislation” was presented at the regular Meeting of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Monday evening with Mrs. John Rogers and Mrs. John Walker presiding. Mrs. Robert Maxell spoke on “Silent Spring,” a book written by Rachel Carson about harm done by insecticides and pesticides. Miss Ruth Kerr also gave a presentation on legislation in progress by the Food and Drug Administration regarding this subject.

Helicopter landing at Danforth school — A Huey helicopter landed on the playground of the East Grand School in Danforth last week much to the delight of the students. The event was coordinated by Sgt. Ken Schob, Army recruiter stationed in Houlton. Students were allowed to sit in the helicopter and talk with the pilots and crew. Other area schools visited included Presque Isle, Caribou and Washburn.
Taking aim at dart tourney — Approximately 30 people attended the Northern Maine Shootout Dart Tournament sponsored by the Lounge DownUnder last Friday and Saturday. Winning in the Cricket level were Bob Tapley, first; Carl Scott, second; and Dave Pond, third.
