Aroostook County’s Class C cross country teams competed in Washburn Thursday and the Class B squads were in Hermon the following afternoon in warm-up meets for the upcoming championships.
On Washburn’s 2.85-mile course, the Fort Kent boys (23 points) topped Washburn (32), while the Beavers had the lone complete girls’ team.
Individually, Matt Toussaint of Fort Kent was first among 18 runners in the boys’ race. He had a winning time of 15:42. Isaiah Brown of Houlton was second at 16:44 and Derek Baker of Washburn third at 16:51.
Also for the Beavers, Devon Maynard was sixth (17:49) and Michael Ericson finished just one slot out of the top 10 with a 19:11 clocking. Limestone-MSSM’s George Sahn was his team’s only runner with a time of 19:25, good for 12th place.
For the girls, Houlton’s Rylee Warman won in 19:50 — 16 seconds ahead of Washburn’s Emilia Churchill for the top spot. In third was Mackenzie Worcester of Washburn, who was 22 seconds behind Churchill. Marianne Helton cracked the top five in 22:19.
Eva Farkas was Limestone-MSSM’s lone competitor and placed 12th in 25:20.
At the Pendale Invitational Friday, the Caribou girls and boys were both second out of six teams. The Viking girls tallied 41 points to finish only five behind meet winner Hampden Academy. Robyn Larrabee placed fourth out of 36 runners in 21:48.14 on the three-mile course. Fellow Caribou runner Madeline Gudde took seventh in 21:53.29, followed by teammates Nerissa Larrabee (21:59.8) and Adessa Judd (22:01.29). Chelsea Haney was the team’s other scorer, ending up 13th in 22:34.5.
The winning time belonged to Hampden Academy’s Elizabeth Labun at 20:03.83.
For the boys, Caribou was again second out of six, tallying 55 points. Elijah Verhoff was the fastest Viking, placing ninth in 18:26.49, teammates Mitchell St. Peter (18:32.43) and Chathu Karunasiri (18:36.78) were 10th and 11th, respectively, out of 41 runners.
The Vikings also featured the next three finishers — Caleb Hunter (18:46.18), Daniel Randolph (18:48.99) and Lukas Lagasse (18:55.76).
Caleb Lord of Hampden was the winner in 17:01.44 and his team grabbed top honors as well with 19 points.
Presque Isle, Old Town, John Bapst and the host Hawks were the other schools participating.
Next for the small schools is the Aroostook League Championship in Fort Kent this afternoon. Caribou takes part in the Penobscot Valley Conference Championships in Bucksport Saturday.
