Editor’s note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Public Library highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by their staff.
Well, well! Now we look forward to Spring and along comes a book about earmuffs! However, as the March winds continue to blow, perhaps this book is viable! “Earmuffs for Everyone” by Meghan McCarthy with her own illustrations is part fun, part historical, part educational and with tact and good humor tells the “real” tale of Maine’s inventor Chester Greenwood, who had 16-year-old sensitive ears.

We learn about patents, waterproof baby pants (before disposable diapers,  of course) and other light bulbs before Thomas Edison made his  light famous. The author touches on Women’s Suffrage Movement by Mrs. Greenwood.
Then we have the enterprising Mickey starting Chester Greenwood Day with tales wonderful to believe which our own Maine Legislature finally enacted in 1977 making Dec. 21 The day for parades with earmuffs of countless varieties worn by people and animals (sometimes vehicles sport giant of Chester’s original black models).
The author has done her research and told the story with such humor and detail, we enjoyed it as an adult, yet it is cataloged in the Children’s Maine Collection. You won’t have to wear earmuffs – the Cary Library is warm, welcoming and waiting for your next visit.
The Cary Public Library is open Monday-Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 532-1302.
