Owl squads wrap up spring trip
The UMPI softball team outscored Trinity Washington College Thursday by a combined 67-1 to sweep a doubleheader in Washington D.C. The victories put an end to the team’s spring trip and the Owls head into Friday afternoon’s twinbill against Southern Maine Community College with a 5-9 record.
UMPI won game one 35-0 before taking the second, 32-1.
In the opener, Katie Patenaude of Presque Isle banged out five hits, including her first collegiate homer, and drove in 10 runs to lead the offense. UMPI totaled 30 hits. Winning pitcher Sara Packard, Jessica Campbell and Carly Bell of Presque Isle had four hits apiece.
Ashley Dube of Caribou and Shannon Brown had four hits each in game two, with Brown driving in six runs. Bell, Whitney Donovan of Ashland, Campbell and Nicole Marucci collected four RBI apiece.
Last Tuesday, UMPI was swept by Mary Baldwin College of Staunton, Va., 12-3 and 8-0.
The Owl baseball team is 3-6 on the season after being swept in both ends of a doubleheader to the University of Valley Forge Thursday to close their spring trip.
Brady Rowe had three hits and Adam Begos notched a pair, but UMPI lost the opening game, 5-2. Saul Nunez of Presque Isle was tagged with the pitching loss. He went five innings, allowing six hits and striking out eight.
In the second game, Valley Forge came away with a 7-5 triumph by scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the tie. Rowe stroked a two-run single to tie the game in the top of the inning. Ghaz Sailors suffered the pitching loss for the Owls, allowing 13 hits during her four-inning stint.
UMPI shut out Vaughn College in New York City a day earlier, 10-0, as Andrew Bartlett pitched a two-hit complete game shutout. Rowe and Jesus Garcia had two RBI each, with Rowe, Matt Curry of Caribou, Begos and Bartlett contributing two hits apiece.
Last Tuesday in Anneville, Pa., UMPI fell to Lebanon Valley College, 8-0. Coach Mike Pankow’s UMPI team is back on the road for a doubleheader Thursday against UM-Farmington in Kents Hill.
