Island Falls notes

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wood have arrived from their home in Wilton, N.H., to spend a few days at their cottage on Upper Mattawamkeag Lake and to check to see if any damage had occurred during the winter months.

All appeared to be okay, so now they plan to make use of the kayaks they brought with them and will have fun kayaking around the area of the upper lake, and maybe exploring some of the lower lake.

Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane, have been recent visitors in Island Falls and spent some time with Riva Hawkes before returning to their homes in Caribou. They are former residents of Island Falls and enjoy the long trip down, especially in the summer when there is no threat of snow or ice and everything is so fresh and green.

I am still going to Vacationland Estates to enjoy the swimming there and now there are more of us each day. The weather has been great and many of the ladies who were regulars last year have returned, so it’s like old home days to see everyone.

I am very happy to report that I have once again seen all my feathered friends back at the feeders. I put out more seeds one day when I saw a lone chickadee looking for a handout, and before I knew it, there were several bright yellow finches there, along with nuthatches, swallows, purple finch and, happy to say, the pair of cardinals I have had all year.

The bad thing is, the seeds have also brought back the two big gray squirrels and the one persistent red squirrel, and as I was watching the other day I saw him chasing away the swallows that were at the feeders. He would jump from the tree limb onto the feeders to scare them off and then sit there to make sure they didn’t come back.

I still plan to keep seeds in the feeders anyway, despite the pesky squirrels.

I finally had the good luck to see a couple of deer when they wandered up across my backyard from the woods down back. They didn’t linger too long, as there probably wasn’t much green to graze on due to the dry weather.
