HOULTON, Maine — Houlton’s Community Market kicked off another season Saturday, May 26, and while the weather was cool, the excitement was high for the return of the popular attraction to Houlton’s downtown.
“It was a great day for the first market of 2018,” said Jane Torres, executive director for the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce. “Not only did we have 14 vendors attend, we had three more sign up for the summer.”
Torres said she was working inside the County Co-op and Farm Store Saturday morning, but saw many people stopping at the market.
“It seemed like everyone who walked through the market stopped in to purchase items,” she said.
Chelsea Gentle of Houlton was one of those shoppers at the market with her mom, Cheryl. Chelsea is home on summer break from attending classes at Husson University and will start pharmacy school in the fall.
“I think it is really nice because it brings the community together,” Chelsea Gentle said. “You get to see a variety of vendors. I always look forward to coming to the market when I come home from the summer.”
Deb Wynes is in her second year selling gourmet popcorn from a stand at her home in Hodgdon and on Saturdays in downtown Houlton with a booth at the market.
“I love meeting all the people that come out for the market and just being outdoors (after a long winter),” Wynes said. “We are waiting for the weather to turn the corner and hopefully the sun will come out.”
The Community Market is held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday from Memorial Day Weekend to Columbus Day.
