Maine District Forester Dan Jacobs hangs a tree tag on a white ash in Riverfront Park along the Meduxnekeag River in Houlton June 14. The tree tagging is part of the outreach that the Southern Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District has been doing to bring awareness to the public about the invasive Asian beetle, the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). EAB is officially in Maine as it was discovered in Madawaska and York County in 2018. With over 100 million native ash trees located throughout Maine, EAB will have significant economic and ecological impacts.. The tree tagging places an environmental value on the ash tree, based on its size. The tags also provide basic information about EAB and tips on how we can help slow the spread. Easiest and most effective is to not move firewood.
