HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Police Department is down three officers following the resignation of Sgt. Charles Wampler and Jason Matheson from the force.
Wampler has been with the department for many years, while Matheson was a more recent hire. As one of two sergeants on the force, Wampler filled a leadership role with the HPD.
“It is with sincere regret that I announce the resignation of Charles Wampler from the Houlton police department,” Houlton Police Chief Tim DeLuca said. “Chuck is a 15-year veteran of the Houlton Police Department and has decided to take on a new career path. He has been an outstanding mentor and contributed to the safety of this agency and community.”
Wampler was one of the officers responsible for organizing and supervising the “Citizens Police Academy” at the HPD for the past several years. He was also a lead instructor at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and served as HPD’s instructor for stun gun safety.
“Chuck has led the Houlton Police Department’s men and women with professionalism and contributed in many other ways,” the chief added. “His departure will leave a vacancy difficult to fill and he will be missed by all.”
Chief DeLuca said Wampler’s decision was surely a difficult one, but he wished him well on the next chapter of his life.
“In all my years of law enforcement, you Chuck, have proven to be one of the best representatives to a department and a community that I have ever worked with,” the chief said. “You were loyal and committed to the cause, leaving a legacy for others to follow. We wish you and your family all the best in your new endeavor.”
Wampler resigned from the force to pursue a career in the private sector workforce as an assistant manager at VIP Auto in Houlton.
“I basically wanted to learn a new skill set and challenge myself by doing so,” Wampler said when contacted Tuesday morning.
