100 Years Ago – July 28, 1920
New proprietor — The final papers in the sale of Crescent Park by Fred E. Stephenson to Geo. A. Russell took place on Monday and Mr. Russell has already taken over the proprietorship.
Mr. Russell will continue to run the palace in an up-to-date manner and in addition to continuing the dances and the use of the park for canoeing and boating, will serve meals to the public and make a specialty of this branch of the business.
Returned from trip — Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hall returned last week from an auto trip to New York and other places, having been gone a month, and during this time Mr. Hall attended the Rotary Convention in Atlantic City as a representative of the Houlton Rotary Club.
75 Years Ago – July 26, 1945
To head English department — Ricker has been very fortunate to secure an Instructor in English, George B. Rich of Fort Fairfield. Mr. Rich will move his family to Houlton as soon as a rent is available. He has three children and his family will be a fine addition to the community.
Pea harvest underway — While the first seasonal operations of the Birdseye-Snider division pea factory here got underway last week on a scale of about two hours a day, the first real speed-up began yesterday when two crews operated the plant for 15 hours. Manager Miller Stanton has said that there will be a need of between 380 and 390 women every day from now on to operate both shifts.
50 Years Ago – July 29, 1970
New Miss Houlton — Miss Gini Butler, daughter of Mrs. Alice Butler and the late Alvin Butler, and first runner-up in the annual Miss Houlton pageant held in conjunction with the Potato Feast July 1, has assumed the title of Miss Houlton due to the recent resignation of Miss Anita Childers. Miss Childers, who represented Houlton at the Potato Blossom Festival in Fort Fairfield, resigned because of her approaching marriage Aug. 1.
Attend convention — Mrs. Lillian Hovey and Mrs. Doris McKay returned home from Honolulu where they attended the Business and Professional Women’s convention as delegates.
25 Years Ago – July 26, 1995
New equipment — Louisiana Pacific donated $10,000 to Houlton Regional Health Services Foundation. There to receive the check were Kathy Stubbs, Gerry Nason, Peg Hannond, and Paula Gendron.
10 years of service — Jerry York presented Carl DeWitt a plaque recognizing his 10 years of service at York’s of Houlton. The presentation was part of DeWitt’s retirement party at the Atrium.
