50 Years Ago — September 6, 1973

  Two miles of fashion and furnishings – When the new Grant City opens in Madawaska on Monday September 10, 1973, in the Midtown Shopping Center it will present two miles of the latest fashions and newest home furnishings. General manager Robert Papke announced that “we will employ about 103 persons on our sales force and behind the scene staff. The vast store was designed to provide a pleasant shopping environment and ease of selection of the many shops within the complete department store.

25 Years Ago — September 9, 1998

Van Buren class of 1943 gathered — Members of the graduating class of 1943 of Van Buren Boys’ and Girls’ High School met for their 55th reunion recently. The event began with a Mass at the Acadian Village Chapel in Upper Van Buren, officiated by Rev. Adhemar Deveau, O.M.I. Following was a buffet meal served at the Village kitchen building. 

10 Years Ago — September 11, 2013 

Historic international ferry crossing inspires local artist — St. Francis native Darren Connors has been working on a mural at the new entrance to Riverside Park since early this summer. The scene depicts the old ferry crossing between Fort Kent and Clair, New Brunswick. At 85 feet in length, it is the longest piece he has worked on. Connors is the same artist who designed and painted the farmers mural on Main Street in 2012.
