50 Years Ago — Sept. 12, 1973

  Gas shortage continues – The ALA Auto and Travel Club reported this week that 25 percent of gas stations in New England ran out of one or more grades of gas over the Labor Day weekend. This represents the worst supply situation since early July and is in marked contrast to the good supplies reported through most of the month of August. 

25 Years Ago — Sept. 16, 1998

Madawaska pre-K program welcomes first students — During the first week of September, Madawaska Elementary School welcomed its very first early childhood program students. This group of 56 4 and 5-year-olds and their parents entered the school for their orientation day with great excitement and enthusiasm. Teachers Linda Palmer and Rose Morin met each family group entering their classrooms. It was difficult to tell who was more excited- students, parents or teachers.

10 Years Ago — Sept. 18, 2013 

Labbe was selected to the Maine Press Hall of Fame — Emery “Legs” Labbe has been chosen as one of three new members to join the Maine Press Association Hall of Fame. The MPA’s Hall of Fame Committee has selected Don Hansen, retired editorial page editor for the Portland Press Herald; Scott Haskell, retired photo editor of the Bangor Daily News; and Emery “Legs” Labbe, retired sports writer for and publisher of the St. John Valley Times, as this year’s inductees.
