50 Years Ago — April 10, 1974
Morneault house dates from 1857 – The Morneault house in Grand Isle has been given to the Living Heritage Vivant Historical Society. There is a very special reason that every effort should be made to preserve this house. It is one of the oldest houses still in existence along the valley. It was built in 1857. There is only another house known to the present writer which antidates this one and that is the Albert House in the Township of Madawaska. Historically, the Morneault House is the most important house in the town of Grand Isle. It has all the characteristics of what is now known as Acadian architecture.

Maine restaurants go smoke-free – Governor Angus King signed the first statewide smoke-free restaurant law in Maine this week. The new law, which eliminates smoking in about 5,500 restaurants and Class A restaurants/lounges throughout the state, will become effective in late August or early September. Maine is one of five states to pass this landmark legislation and is joined by more than 200 cities and towns nationally with smoke-free restaurant ordinances.

Spring fishing begins — Chris Bard took advantage of the open water at the bridge in Soldier Pond on Saturday, April 5 to do some early season fly fishing. Bard, who lives in Fort Kent, said that the salmon were in the river but not biting very much yet. He commented that in January and February he caught some big fish on his fly rod in the open water below Fish River Falls.
