LIMESTONE, Maine – After falling months behind, developers who own a portion of the former Loring Air Force Base have paid real estate taxes to Limestone.
Green 4 Maine, LLC purchased 450 acres of the base from the state-funded Loring Development Authority last year, making that part of Loring subject to local tax assessment. Tax payments were due Dec. 1, 2023, but Green 4 Maine leaders had not paid up as of mid July, said Interim Town Manager Alan Mulherin, at a selectboard meeting.
Green 4 Maine has now paid their full $155,580 bill, Mulherin said Tuesday. They initially paid $25,000 last week and then paid the remaining balance Monday.
Fifty-eight buildings sit on Green 4 Maine’s acreage, which helped lead to a significant tax rate decrease for Limestone in 2023. Unlike Loring Development Authority-owned land, Green 4 Maine’s property is privately owned and eligible for taxation.
Green 4 Maine co-founder and president Scott Hinkel was not immediately available for comment Tuesday.
