On June 10 the Central Aroostook Humane Society will hold our popular annual Paws for the Cause fundraiser. Registration starts at 9:30 and the Walk will begin at 10. There will also be a Rabies Clinic offered from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.
This event brings pet owners and their pets from all over The County and beyond to enjoy a two-mile walk, some tasty snacks and the great camaraderie with other four-legged fans. Many dogs that show up are pets that started their journey at the Central Aroostook Humane Society and come back every year with their families to support the shelter. We hold the event rain or shine, but I think we all prefer “shine.”
Pledge sheets were made available on our Facebook page, so print one out and check with all your family and friends to help support you in your walk. We usually see over 50 walkers with dogs of every size, color, age and shape. We are excited to present various “awards” given out at the end based on category.
Proceeds from this fun event greatly help out with the everyday care of the shelter pets. Unbelievably, the shelter has been doing the Paws for the Cause Walk for close to 20 years. We can’t express enough how grateful we are to have the continued support of not only the generous folks, but all the wonderful four-legged fans of the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We always encourage the spaying or neutering of all of your pets. There are so many unwanted litters that occur way too often. Altering a pet is the single best thing that you can do for your beloved “four-legged family” member.
According to statistics from the Humane Society of the United States: One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in six years’ time. One female cat and her offspring can produce 20,736 in four years’ time. Those are sobering facts for sure. We at the Central Aroostook Humane Society have been proactive in having many animals altered before they are adopted. We have seen a steady decline in the animals coming into the shelter over the past five years and we can only attribute that to the fact that fewer litters are occurring from pets being adopted out unaltered.
Remember to do your part in helping to control the pet population.
We hope to see you this Saturday for our Paws Walk. We are located at 26 Cross Street, Presque Isle (in the Industrial Park area near the Airport; we are the blue building across from the big windmill). Our hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closing for lunch 12-12:30.
