101 Years Ago – Feb. 21, 1918

Trustees elected — The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Merchants’ Trust & Banking Company was held at the Banking Rooms. The following trustees were elected: Charles V. Cayting, M.C. Smith, A.M. Smith, Charles W. Spear, C.E. Hussey, Benjamin Franklin, R.J. Smith, Dr. F.E. Bennett, T.F. Phair, H.N. Crandall, A.A, Joy, John McBride, H.B. Russ. An important meeting of the Board of Trustees followed, when the following officers were elected: President, Chas. W. Spear; Vice President and Treasurer, A.A. Joy. Mr. Smith was appointed a committee to draw up resolutions on the death of C.H. Richardson, who was a valued trustee of the bank.

75 Years Ago –  Feb. 24, 1944

Annual meeting — Guy L. Hewitt of Mars Hill was re-elected to the board of directors of the Presque Isle Production Credit Association at their annual meeting held at the Northeastland Hotel. The meeting was an all day session starting with President Ralph W. Cary acting as chairman. Immediately following the meeting, the board of directors met and elected Ralph W. Cary of Presque Isle, president; Sam J. Hartley of Bridgewater, vice president; David K. Abbott of Presque Isle, secretary-treasurer, and Floris Gee of Presque Isle, assistant secretary-treasurer.

50 Years Ago –  Feb. 19, 1969

Electrical contest — Ann Storey, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Martin on Ashland and a senior at Ashland Community High School, was the winner of the Electrification Scholarship Contest for Ashland Community High School, sponsored by the Electric Service Companies of Maine — Youth Activities. Her winning on a local level made her eligible to be the delegate from the school to participate in the state-wide test at the University of Maine in Orono. The winner of the statewide test determines the winners of the scholarships of $500 for first place; $250 for second place.

Safe driver award — Two rural mail carriers at the Presque Isle Post Office received Safe Driving Awards from the National Safety Council, according to William D. Halloran, postmaster. James Mallett received hsi six year award and Ralph Roix his third year award. They each drive 70 miles per day on their routes. The Safe Driver Award is the trademark of drivers who had proved their skill in avoiding preventable traffic accidents.

25 Years Ago –  Feb. 23, 1994

DEP merger — The Department of Environmental Protection merged two major programs to form the Bureau of Land and Water Quality. The action facilitated better coordination of environmental policy as well as improved operations and efficiency. For more than 20 years, DEP had managed land and water quality issues through separate and distinct programs. While significant environmental progress had been made. DEP Commissioner Dean Marriott believed that integrating efforts offered the potential for even greater benefits.

Certified managers — To help individuals prepare for certified manager examinations, NMTC periodically offered an instructional program in supervision and management. Participants in NMTC’s supervision and management program received 48 hours of supervisory instruction, a two-hour exam preview and a three-volume set of study guides. Graduates of the most recent program went on to take the exams in November and learned of their results in late December. Participants in the NMTC program were Jim Williams of New Sweden; Kathleen Forbes of Caribou; Nicole Stetson of Mapleton; Darylen Cote of Limestone; Myrna M. Daigle of Presque Isle; and Lori Churchill off F0rt Fairfield. Stetson was recognized as associate certified manager, the first in Maine, while the others were each recognized as certified managers.
